Nkesiga Cancer Foundation
The Nkesiga Cancer Foundation (sponsored by AAR) in partnership with Rev Canon Diana Nkesiga was started in memory of the late Rev Dr. Solomon Nkesiga who suffered from cancer of the gall bladder. Rev. Dr. Solomon’s unique approach to cancer treatment prompted AAR Insurance to name a foundation after him to continue the fight against cancer in his name.
Solomon devoted most of his adult life serving God as an ordained Anglican minister, with a holistic ministry, thirteen of those years; he served as a missionary of reconciliation in post-apartheid South Africa. His holistic ministry touched lives of the poorest and the affluent alike, often leaving tangible monuments of his work of development and reconciliation, wherever he served.
Solomon was a theologian and an academician who sought to improve Uganda’s approach to education. He also ventured into research on herbal (natural) remedies to fight diabetes, hypertension and later on cancer.
During his illness he set up a tele-support system to reach out and encourage others who also battled with cancer. He kept a healthy and realistic attitude toward his illness and I remember one hospital cleaner saying I enjoy coming to this room because the patient has a ‘happy spirit’. Often when he greeted Solomon in the morning he would ask in luganda ‘Obukuluma bwa kusuziza butya?’Solomon would answer, ‘Nange njjakubuluma’. A literal translation would be ‘how would that which hurts(bites you) treat you through the night. Solomon’s answer, ‘I will also hurt(bite) it back.’ Such was his sense of humour. He began his fight from his hospital bed in India and he typed away leaving a tool to continue the fight.
